Our Purpose

The purpose of the student-led RPI Mental Health & Well-Being Committee is to allow for streamlined, collaborative communication between mental health and student advocacy efforts, including both official and unofficial student clubs, organizations, and projects, who share the common goal of improving student mental health and wellness on campus. We strive to create a diverse space of dedicated and passionate students coming together to share their ideas, support each other’s efforts, and foster a cohesive, collaborative network working for the betterment of the overall Rensselaer community.

Ava Gallagher '23, 134th RPI President of the Union (PU)

" Mental health and well being is of the utmost importance to our students and our campus: students have the most success when they have a sense of community, are supported, and feel heard.  The Union offers students over 200 clubs and organizations, and there really is something for everyone with any niche interest.  Groups such as Active Minds provide our students an outlet and a small group with a shared passion, enabling them to build lasting relationships."

How we got started

The idea for the RPI Mental Health & Well-Being Committee came from the 2023 RPI Mental Health Week program.  This program was a collaboration between several different student clubs and community organizations.  In an effort to extend this collaboration beyond just Mental Health Week so we could continue to support each other's events and projects throughout the schoolyear, the idea for this committee was born!

OUR GOALS

Some of the primary goals of the RPI Mental Health & Well-Being Committee include:

  • Establish a dedicated network for students to jointly plan specific major school events (such as Mental Health Week, the Out of the Darkness Walk for Suicide Prevention, APO Service Day, etc.)

  • Allow for student organizations to help support each other in advocacy work related to campus accessibility, Title IX policy, mental health, etc.

  • Create centralized communication and collaboration on similar types of student-led events or other initiatives

  • Provide any student, regardless of class year or organization affiliation, with the opportunity to have a voice concerning important issues on campus and actively take part in effecting positive change
